NEWSLETTER ROBERT S. HARTMAN INSTITUTE Minimize

NEWSLETTER

Robert S. Hartman Institute, January 2009

The 2009 annual Meeting of the Hartman Institute will be held in Knoxville, TN from October 22-24. Please make your plans to attend! Our Program Chairperson is K. T. Connor. Please contact her  at ktconnor@thinkingpattern.com  if you wish to make a presentation at the fall conference. Deadlines  and information about making reservations will be announced later. Details about the program will be posted here in late August, 2009.

A LETTER FROM STEVE

Happy New Year!  What a nice gift K.T. and Rem are giving us with the new look of our newsletter.   We don't have many meetings, so it's easy to feel disconnected with one another and with the different areas of work we're involved in.   I believe the newsletter can help us gain a level of resonance with each other that we don't achieve with one yearly meeting.
I am really looking forward to all that we will do in 2009.  The Mexico conference was exceptional, and we will build on that.   Rem's work with the first Journal made us look like we were old pros at producing a journal.   Our initiatives to move more toward advancing Hartman's work (as opposed to policing users of the profile) will give a new character to our work.   I am anxious to see us move forward with determination in securing contributions and grants to make real our Institute's vision.
What a nice base we already have.   What a bright future we have.   In a decade, I predict that knowledge of Hartman, academic programs advancing this knowledge, and the use of the Profile in diverse settings--all will exponentially grow.   It will be a gratifying challenge to pursue!

Warmly,
Steve Byrum
President, RSHI

A New Old Institute

Energized by our President, the Board has recommitted the RSHI to its founding Mission: to refine, enhance and promote the Formal Axiology of Robert S. Hartman.  We identified 5 strategies that will be our focus for the future:

1.  To take a stand for and create a climate of peace.
2.  To support more research through grants.
3.  To have Formal Axiology taught in universities and elsewhere.
4.  To have more people using Formal Axiology in more fields.
5.  To Develop a formal Calculus of Value that really works.

This directs us toward our Vision and motivating force: To change the world for the better.  We feel this Mission and these Strategies will help us do that.

What difference should we notice?  We will only pay attention to those projects and great ideas that will support one or more of our strategies.  Also, we will no longer focus on our members' businesses and monitoring profile use.  We recognize that Hartman's legacy is so much more than the profile, as powerful as that is.  This world at this time deserves all the richness that Hartman's life left with us.

SIGNIFICANT CHANGES AT THE HARTMAN INSTITUTE

The following significant changes approved by our Board of Directors are now in effect.

1. EFFECTIVE IN 2008 THE HARTMAN INSTITUTE WILL NO LONGER COLLECT ROYALTIES FOR USING THE HARTMAN VALUE PROFILE. HOWEVER, ALL ROYALTIES OWED THROUGH 2007 SHOULD BE PAID.
Practically, this means that Consultants and Distributors will no longer (as of 2008) have to do bookkeeping for us on the number of times they use the HVP professionally. We expect no more reports from you about this, though if you owe royalties through 2007, please pay up promptly. We are on the verge of reaching a final settlement with the descendants of Jan Hartman concerning ownership rights to Bob Hartman's intellectual properties, and we badly need to have all royalties through 2007 paid up as soon as possible. We assume most if not all of you have already done this, but if not please heed this reminder.

In recent years, we at the Institute have expended so much time and effort trying to collect
royalties that we have tended to neglect our primary mission, which is to be a source of education
and information about all aspects of and applications of the Formal Axiology developed by Robert
S. Hartman. Hartman's work has many ramifications and applications beyond the HVP. Under the
leadership of our President, Steve Byrum, we are now resolved to return to our old mission, which
for us, at this stage, is a "new direction."

This will mean a very significant loss of income for the Institute, so let us now tell you about
additional significant changes that we hope will help us to compensate somewhat for this loss.

2. EFFECTIVE IN 2009, MEMBERSHIP DUES REMAIN THE SAME, BUT FEES WILL BE CHARGED FOR LISTING ON OUR WEBSITE AS A DISTRIBUTOR AND/OR CONSULTANT. Here are the details.

The current “Consultants in Good Standing” directory on our website has now been changed to the
“Directory of Axiological Service Providers”. The button for it on the left of our opening page says "Axiological Service Providers" for short.
A. Paying royalties on the HVP is no longer a condition for being listed on our “Directory of
Axiological Service Providers.” Those currently listed as “Consultants in Good Standing” will
continue to be listed on this new page through 2008. On January 1, 2009 (with latitude until March
1, 2009), the following requirements for listing will go into effect.
 B. Beginning in 2009, to be listed on our Directory of Axiological Service Providers, the
following conditions must be met:
 1) Each person listed as a Distributor or Consultant must be a Member of the Institute, pay
annual dues, and thus be listed on our “Membership Directory” page.
 2) Each person listed as a Distributor or Consultant must pay an additional annual listing fee of $250.00.
 3) Any NEW MEMBER being listed as a Consultant or Distributor after July 1st each year will pay
only half of the above membership and listing fees to cover the remainder of the calendar year.
 5) Everyone listed as a Consultant or Distributor must file a signed copy of our “Code of Ethics,” with the InstituteÂ’s Treasurer, who at present is:

Darlene Clark, Treasurer
Robert S. Hartman Institute
3201 Bandera Street
Athens, TX 75752

Those who wish to be listed may begin doing this immediately rather than waiting until next January. A button for this new "Code of Ethics" has now been added on the left of opening page of this website. Click on it and you may go there to read it.

Annual dues and listing fees will be due in January of each calendar year, but no later than March 1st. After March 1st, anyone who has not paid dues, the listing fee, or filed a signed copy of our "Code of Ethics" will be removed from our Directory of Axiological Service Providers.

3. WE NOW STRONGLY ENCOURAGE VOLUNTARY FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ROBERT S. HARTMAN INSTITUTE.
We are a non-profit organization, so contributions may afford some tax breaks to contributors.
Darlene Clark, our Treasurer, will supply our tax exempt organization number to all contributors
when their checks are received. Contributors will receive a letter of receipt acknowledging the
exact amount of their contribution. In due time, we will add a “Contributors” page to our website
on which all contributors will be listed. We strongly encourage those who have been paying
royalties on the HVP to make voluntary contributions instead.

4. MEMBERSHIP DUES FOR 2008 WILL REMAIN THE SAME.
Recall that membership dues now include a subscription to our new JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY:
THEORY AND PRACTICE. The first issue is now in hand and Jay Niblick, our Distribution Manager, mailed them out to everyone during the week ending August 30th. Look for your copy soon if you do not have it already.

For 2008 and 2009, we will publish only one issue per year of our JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY: THEORY AND PRACTICE, so this will affect MEMBERSHIP DUES as follows.

A. Those who paid $80.00 for dues in 2008 now have their subscription paid up for both 2008 and
2009. In January of 2009, current members only will have to pay dues of $50.00---but no additional
payment for the 2009 issue of the JOURNAL...
B. In 2009, all new members will pay $65.00, which covers both dues and subscription to the
JOURNAL... They may also purchase the 2008 issue of the JOURNAL... if they wish for an additional $15.00.
C. In 2009, non-members may subscribe to the JOURNAL... for $20.00. They may also purchase the 2008 issue of the JOURNAL... if they wish for an additional $20.00.

Extra copies of the JOURNAL... may be purchased BY SUBSCRIBERS ONLY for $8.00 per copy if a member or $10.00 per copy if a non-member, postage paid. Send your check to Darlene Clark.

NEW JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY: THEORY AND PRACTICE
To learn about our new journal,  click on the JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY  button on the left. Please consider submitting your research in Hartmanian value theory to us to be considered for possible publication. SUBSCRIPTIONS TO THIS JOURNAL ARE INCLUDED IN MEMBERSHIP DUES FOR 2008, as next announced. If member subscribers wish to buy extra copies of the JOURNAL to distribute to clients and friends, the new price is $8.00 per copy postage paid. Non-member subscribers may buy extra copies for $10.00 per copy. Additional postage of $10.00 per copy will be required for shipments outside the United States. Please contact Rem at: remb@bellsouth.net.

DEADLINES FOR JOURNAL ARTICLES
Because of unexpected delays and complications, we will be able to publish only one issue of this JOURNAL in 2008 and 2009, but we hope to expand to two issues per year after we accumulate a sufficient backlog of first rate articles.
The 2008 issue was be mailed to subscribers in August, 2008. We have to set deadlines for submission of articles and discussions for possible publication. In order to make time for the blind review process, making revisions, etc., submissions for the 2009 issue need to be in to Rem B. Edwards no later than MARCH 1st, 2009. Send your stuff earlier if at all possible!  Send articles that conform to the requirements specified in our website to Rem (remb@bellsouth.net) as e-mail attachments. We can’t have a JOURNAL...unless someone is willing to write for it! Look at the criteria for submission on our website in the JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY page.

REDUCED PRICE ON EXTRA COPIES OF JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY

The first issue of our new JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY is now in hand and will be mailed out to all subscribers and authors as promptly as possible. Now that we are this close to publication, we have a clearer view of actual costs for extra copies than we once had, and we can reduce the price on extra copies to subscribers. Printing the first several hundred copies is expensive, but additional copies beyond that are much cheaper, depending on how many extra copies we order from our printer.

We have ordered enough additional copies to be able to reduce the price of Volume I to subscribers for any extra copies that they may want. Our new price is $8.00 per copy to member subscribers and $10.00 per copy to non-member subscribers--both postage paid in the US. To order extra copies, please send a check to Darlene Clark, Treasurer, Hartman Institute, 3201 Street, Athens, TX 75752.

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR 2009 ISSUE

The 2009 issue of our Journal will have "Is Formal Axiology a Science?" as its general theme. Other papers on other topics will also be considered. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2009. For general writing and submission guidelines, click on the "JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY" button on the left.

DUES FOR 2009
Except for those whose primary membership is in the Iberoamerican Branch, Annual Membership DUES of $65.00 for 2009 were due in January and must be paid no later than March 1. This price covers your new subscription to the JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY: THEORY AND PRACTICE. Since, on hindsight, we can produce only one issue per year, if you paid $80.00 in 2008, your subscription is paid up through next year, and in January, 2009, you will need to pay only $50.00 for dues. For more subscription information, visit our JOURNAL OF FORMAL AXIOLOGY page. Iberoamerican Branch membership dues remain at $50.00 and do not include a subscription to our new JOURNAL; but for an additional price they may also receive the JOURNAL. Outside the US, please add an additional $10.00 per copy for shipping.

Our annual membership dues cover calendar years, so they should be paid in January of each year, but no later than March 31st, when your listing will be removed from our website if you have not renewed. THIS IS THE ONLY NOTICE YOU WILL RECEIVE FOR YOUR 2008 DUES. Please send dues checks made out to the "Robert S. Hartman Institute" to Darlene Clark, Treasurer, Robert S. Hartman Institute, 3201 Bandera Street, Athens, TX 75752. Please go to the “Membership Application and Renewal” button on the left, print out the form, fill it out, and send it to Darlene along with your check. If already a member, please check your listing on our website in the "Membership Directory" and, where relevant, in “Directory of Axiological Service Providers.” If anything needs changing or updating, please call these changes to Darlene’s attention. Also, in the future, please send all contact changes to her at:  Darlene@darleneclark.com.

NEW HARTMAN INSTITUTE VALUE PROFILE TO BE AVAILABLE AFTER VALIDATION
Our Board of Directors has finalized the items to be included in our new Hartman Institute Value Profile, which we believe will be an improvement on the Standard HVP. However, this new instrument needs to be validated before we make it available for use by Consultants and researchers. Presumably, this validation work is now being done, though the Secretary has heard nothing from this since last October. This process may take some time, so please be patient.

BUSINESS ANNOUNCEMENTS
If you would like to get announcements about developments in your HVP-related consulting business into our Newsletters, please send them to Rem at remb@bellsouth.net.

We invite all Members and Consultants who have not already done so to send us a short (a page or two long ) autobiographical statement that we can place with your listing in the "Membership Directory" and/or "Axiological Service Providers" pages of our website. It should tell something about yourself, your business, and your involvement with the Hartman Value Profile or other aspects of Robert S. Hartman's work. Look at some already-existing autobiographies on our website if you want to see how others are doing it. Autobiographies must be sent to Edwards AS E-MAIL ATTACHMENTS. Send to: remb@bellsouth.net.
If you have not already done so, in which case your listing will not show them, please send your college or advanced degree(s) to Edwards at the above e-mail address. Give exact letters like "BA" or "BS" rather than using general terms like "Bachelors."

SALE ON HARTMAN'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY
The Hartman Institute has bought a number of copies of Robert S. Hartman's autobiography, Freedom to Live; The Robert Hartman Story, from its publisher at a significantly discounted price. We can make them available to members of the Institute for $20.00 per copy plus $3.50 per copy for postage and packaging costs. Send your orders to our President, Dr. Stephen C. Byrum, at byrum4@aol.com. Phone or fax him at 423-8886-5587. These would make great gifts for your clients! Editions Rodopi has now returned to copyright on this to us, so when we sell our current stock, we will republish the book at a much cheaper price than Editions Rodopi has been charging.

STATEMENT ON HARTMAN'S FREEDOM TO LIVE
In consultation with former President Leon Pomeroy, Editors Art Ellis and Rem B. Edwards developed the following statement for Hartman's Freedom to Live, and we encourage all sellers and users to photocopy this and include it with the book:

The Robert S. Hartman Institute recognizes that two discussions in Freedom to Live: The Robert S. Hartman Story may offend some people if taken out of context, but we ask for tolerance and understanding and hope that the following remarks will help.

First, on p. 27 Hartman refers to his anti-Hitler article in which he accuses "the Nazi leadership" of being "dominated by homosexuals." A young Robert Schirokauer, who later became Robert Hartman when he escaped Germany and the Nazis, published this article in 1932. It was written at a time when homosexuality was closeted and the Nazis' open practice of it was associated with their general decadence, both homosexual and heterosexual. In this context, it was reflective of the culture of degradation which the Nazis promoted. Hartman devoted the rest of his life to finding ways to organize goodness and to combat evil of all kinds, especially hatred, violence, and intolerance which the Nazis exemplified.

Second, on p. 163 Hartman states that "Jesus was crucified by the powers that were: the Jewish community and the Roman state." Seen in context, this sentence is best understood to be about the "powers" or authorities in the Jewish community, not about the community as a whole. Robert Hartman had a Jewish father, later married a Jewish wife, Rita Emanuel, and fled Nazi Germany for his vigorous opposition to Hitler and Nazism. No Anti-Semitism was intended by his words, rather an explanation that the actual "powers" or authorities who crucified Jesus were operating within the framework of existing law, which can always be used "for either good or evil," in this case for evil. It is a commentary on the dangers of power.
